Spike in Federal Recovery Act Grant Proposals Spurs Need for Automation at Research Organizations

Portland, Oregon: Despite the challenging economic climate and reduced university budgets, Cayuse, Inc. has added over 15 new institutional customers since January 1, 2009. Cayuse424, the company's web-based proposal development platform, is used by over 60 institutions to prepare, manage, and electronically submit federal grant applications.

The huge increase in grant opportunities associated with the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) has highlighted for many organizations the need to automate the complex and labor-intensive federal grant process. With sophisticated error-correction and automatic completion of federal forms, the Cayuse platform has demonstrated cost and labor savings that make it an easily justifiable investment.

"One of the primary reasons Caltech selected Cayuse was the ability to conduct a trial of the software and submit real proposals, without needing to install the software on our servers or otherwise burden our campus IT group," said David Mayo, Director of Sponsored Research at the California Institute of Technology. "We ran the trial for two months, during the initial ARRA NIH submissions in April and May of 2009, and found that our proposal preparers saved significant amounts of time - in many cases 50% or more over the traditional Grants.gov Adobe form set."

In addition to Caltech, new Cayuse customers include The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, The University of Iowa, The University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas State University, The Salk Institute of Biological Studies, and others. Cayuse customers have prepared and electronically submitted federal grant applications worth over $5 billion since January 1, 2009.

Cayuse424 is delivered via a Web browser in the Software as a Service (SaaS) model, with minimal IT involvement required. Sophisticated error-checking and configurable routing and approval yields immediate improvements in an organization’s federal grant proposal development processes.
